"No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will hold to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon. For this reason I say to you, do not be anxious for your life, as to what you shall eat, or what you shall drink; nor for your body, as to what you shall put on. Is not life more than food, and the body than clothing? "Look at the birds of the air, that they do not sow, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not worth much more than they? "And which of you by being anxious can add a single cubit to his life's span? "And why are you anxious about clothing? Observe how the lilies of the field grow; they do not toil nor do they spin, yet I say to you that even Solomon in all his glory did not clothe himself like one of these. "But if God so arrays the grass of the field, which is alive today and tomorrow is thrown into the furnace, will He not much more do so for you, O men of little faith? "Do not be anxious then, saying, 'What shall we eat?' or 'What shall we drink?' or 'With what shall we clothe ourselves?' "For all these things the Gentiles eagerly seek; for your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. "But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness; and all these things shall be added to you. "Therefore do not be anxious for tomorrow; for tomorrow will care for itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own." Matt 6:24-34
Jesus spoke these words in Mt. 6:24-34 precisely for you and me -- to help us overcome whatever is making you anxious this morning or these past months. Serving God brings peace. Serving the world brings turmoil.
Compare Matt. 6:24 with :
Grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord; seeing that His divine power has granted to us everything pertaining to life and godliness, through the true knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and excellence. For by these He has granted to us His precious and magnificent promises, in order that by them you might become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world by lust. 2 Pet 1:2-4
Peace : generally speaking it is the absence of turmoil. Theologically speaking, it means no hostility against God - because the mind set on the flesh is hostile toward God; for it does not subject itself to the law of God, for it is not even able to do so; Rom 8:7
So here are some things we can do when turmoil comes our way :
A. WAITING ON THE LORD COMES FIRST: This Means We Must Know God, Spending Time With God In Prayer, Trusting in Him & in the Peace He Alone Gives
In peace I will both lie down and sleep, for Thou alone, O LORD, dost make me to dwell in safety. Ps 4:8
"For thus says the LORD, 'When seventy years have been completed for Babylon, I will visit you and fulfill My good word to you, to bring you back to this place. 'For I know the plans that I have for you,' declares the LORD, 'plans for welfare and not for calamity to give you a future and a hope. Jer 29:10-11
PSA 37:7 Rest in the LORD, and wait patiently for him: fret not thyself because of him who prospereth in his way, because of the man who bringeth wicked devices to pass.
PSA 27:14 Wait on the LORD: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the LORD.
PSA 62:5 My soul, wait thou only upon God; for my expectation is from him.
ISA 40:31 But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.
B. THEN WE MUST WALK WITH THE LORD, Knowing that He is the Path of Peace
Depart from evil, and do good; seek peace, and pursue it. Ps 34:14
"There is no peace," says my God, "for the wicked." Isa 57:21
Those who love Thy law have great peace, and nothing causes them to stumble. Ps 119:165
I, therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, entreat you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling with which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, showing forbearance to one another in love, being diligent to preserve the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. Eph 4:1-3
And they said to one another, "Were not our hearts burning within us while He was speaking to us on the road, while He was explaining the Scriptures to us?" Luke 24:32
For we walk by faith, not by sight 2 Cor 5:7
But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not carry out the desire of the flesh Gal 5:16
For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them. Eph 2:10
Thou wilt make known to me the path of life; in Thy presence is fullness of joy; in Thy right hand there are pleasures forever. Ps 16:11 ( Joy - gladness of heart because of a right relationship with the Lord - positional & experiential, Jas. 1:2 - Consider it all joy, my brethren, when you encounter various trials, )
I have no greater joy than this, to hear of my children walking in the truth. 3 Jn 1:4
C. THEN WE MUST WORK FOR THE LORD : pursuing the things which make for peace
My son, do not forget my teaching, but let your heart keep my commandments; For length of days and years of life, and peace they will add to you. Prov 3:1-2
For the word of the LORD is upright; and all His work is done in faithfulness. Ps 33:4
2 Cor 5:10 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may be recompensed for his deeds in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad.
For I am confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus. Phil 1:6
For God is not unjust so as to forget your work and the love which you have shown toward His name, in having ministered and in still ministering to the saints. Heb 6:10
I urge you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, [which is] your spiritual service of worship. 2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.
As each one has received a special gift, employ it in serving one another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God. 1 Pet 4:10
D. WORSHIP OF THE LORD, knowing He is the source of Peace. Our worship is greatly enhanced when the above 3 points are applied to our lives.
Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, shall guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Phil. 4:6,7
And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body; and be thankful. Col 3:15
"Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you; not as the world gives, do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, nor let it be fearful. John 14:27
Ascribe to the LORD the glory due to His name; worship the LORD in holy array. Ps 29:2
Come, let us worship and bow down; let us kneel before the LORD our maker. For He is our God, and we are the people of His pasture, and the sheep of His hand. Ps 95:6-7
"God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth." John 4:24
And I looked, and I heard the voice of many angels around the throne and the living creatures and the elders; and the number of them was myriads of myriads, and thousands of thousands, saying with a loud voice, "Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power and riches and wisdom and might and honor and glory and blessing."
